I'm a retired Canadian Armed Forces Imagery Technician and Afghanistan Veteran, as well as the Co-Founder and Director of Alberta for Kadence Legacy Fund. Inspired by my daughter Kadence and her service dog, Sadie, I'm dedicated to improving the lives of Veterans, First Responders, and their families through professionally trained PTSD service dogs. As a volunteer, I'm passionate about building community partnerships, supporting mental health, and creating lasting change through service dogs.

Today, on Military Family Appreciation Day, we recognize the families who serve alongside members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Behind every serving member and veteran are spouses, partners, children, parents and caregivers who experience the realities of military life: long separations, frequent moves, missed milestones, uncertainty, caregiving and the lasting effects of service.
As veteran co-founders of Kadence Legacy Fund and a family shaped by military service, this recognition is deeply personal to us. Derek is a fourth-generation military member. Both of his parents served, and he spent part of his childhood growing up in Lahr, Germany.
Our lived experience also influences the work we do through KLF. We understand that the effects of service do not end with the individual. They are often carried by the entire family.
Today, we recognize the strength, sacrifice and resilience of Canada’s military families.

Our KLF team will be collecting bottles throughout October in:

Your bottle donations will help purchase leashes, collars, haltis, training bags, clickers, treats and other essential service-dog training supplies.

One Dog. One Life. A Personal Story of Hope and New Beginnings
In May, one of our One Dog. One Life. program recipients submitted her application along with a heartfelt mini-documentary sharing some of the challenges she was facing as a Veteran family spouse navigating breast cancer.
After hearing her story, our team immediately knew that supporting her application was the right thing to do.
At Kadence Legacy Fund, we recognize that the mental health journey of a Veteran spouse matters too. The trauma of a serious illness such as cancer does not affect only one person. It can touch an entire family, bringing emotional strain, uncertainty and fear into a household that may already understand the lasting effects of service-related trauma.
Throughout her journey, KLF has been honoured to support her as she prepares to welcome service dog K9 Ellie into her home. We have helped provide essential equipment, including a specialized leash set, treats, KLF clothing and other items to support their new life together.
After an incredibly difficult year, she is travelling again, creating memories and embracing life. She recently shared some beautiful photos with us. Seeing her looking happy, healthy and hopeful reminds us exactly why we do what we do.
Her hair is growing back, her beautiful smile says so much, and a new chapter with her service dog is beginning.
We are committed to protecting the privacy of our handlers, but we are delighted to share this joyful photo of K9 Ellie settling into her new home with her handler, “K.”

On International Dog Day, we celebrate the dogs that bring people together and transform lives. 🐾
Through professional training, peer support and shared experiences, Kadence Legacy Fund’s One Dog. One Life. program is building more than service-dog teams. We are creating a supportive community where Veterans, First Responders and their families do not have to walk this journey alone.

Today, members of the Kadence Legacy Fund team were honoured to attend the 1 Combat Engineer Regiment RSM Change of Command Parade and Awards Ceremony, where MWO (Ret’d) John Dugas, CD was presented with a Canadian Military Engineers Association Commendation in recognition of his outstanding contributions.
John’s commitment to Canada’s Veteran and service dog communities has been extraordinary.
Through years of advocacy, fundraising, training, and service, John has helped raise more than $2 million to improve Veterans’ access to service dogs and has trained more than 65 service dogs, supporting Veterans, First Responders, and others living with PTSD.
Despite everything he has accomplished, John remains incredibly humble and focused on the people and dogs behind the work.
For Kadence Legacy Fund, this recognition is especially meaningful. Through our partnership with Holdfast K9, John serves as KLF’s Alberta Certified Service Dog Trainer and is instrumental in the training standards and delivery of our One Dog. One Life. Service Dog Program.
Congratulations, John. This commendation is exceptionally well deserved. We are incredibly proud to have you as part of the KLF team.

Kadence Legacy Fund is inviting businesses, nonprofits, community groups, Military Family Resource Centres, healthcare organizations, and mental health advocates to join our national Kadence and Sadie children’s book campaign.
Inspired by Kadence and her service dog, Sadie, this meaningful story will help children and families understand trauma, resilience, hope, and the healing bond between a child and a service dog.
Our vision is to place copies of Kadence and Sadie in Military Family Resource Centres, children’s oncology units, mental health facilities, schools, libraries, and communities across Canada—while raising funds to help provide service dogs to Veterans and First Responders living with PTSD.

Every lasting legacy begins with one organization willing to believe in a vision.
Today, Kadence Legacy Fund is beginning the search for one Legacy Presenting Partner to help launch our national Children's Mental Health & Service Dog Education Initiative.
Inspired by Kadence, her service dog Sadie, and the lived experiences of two Afghanistan Veterans, this initiative uses storytelling, education, and community partnerships to create conversations around PTSD, resilience, hope, and the life-changing impact of professionally trained service dogs.
As our Legacy Presenting Partner, your organization will be recognized as the founding partner of this national initiative, with recognition throughout the project, within the published children's book, and across our awareness campaign.
By September 2026, we'll have professionally designed sample book layouts available, allowing prospective partners to see how they'll be recognized as part of this lasting legacy.
Following the selection of our Legacy Presenting Partner, we'll also invite organizations and businesses to become part of this initiative through dedicated recognition pages within the book, celebrating those committed to supporting children's mental health, PTSD awareness, Veterans, First Responders, and professionally trained service dogs.
