We provide training and ongoing support (as well as materials) for volunteers working with our ESL (English Second Language) clients. No previous experience is necessary. As an accomplished English speaker and long-term resident of Canada, you have much to offer our clients! We ask for a commitment of 1.5 - 2 hours per week with your student, although some volunteers offer twice per week or take on 2 students. We recommend starting with once per week. No pressure for more if that suits you well. Volunteers help our clients to reach goals, connect to the community, and become more independent. For example, a (provided) lesson might help a parent prepare for a meeting with her child's teacher, practice for a job interview, learn about wildlife safety, or call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Some clients would like to improve their conversation skills and others would like to improve their writing in order to take a post-secondary course or work in their fields of expertise. You can let us know what you're comfortable with or if you have any particular skills you'd like to share (e.g. nursing or business mentor-ship, connection for a newcomer parent, etc. ). Again, no specific skills or experience is required - just a willingness to help and an appreciation for diversity in our community. Meeting times are chosen by the student and the tutor based on their availability and can be adjusted as needed (and breaks as desired). Travel for the winter? No problem - we'd love some help when you're in town!
