My Time at Coastal Community
My name is Devon and I have worked for Coastal Community Credit Union for almost 9 years. I currently work in the Parksville and Nanoose branches as an MSR2.
Please tell us about the organization you volunteer with and what you do and why this organization is important to you.
I volunteer as a soccer coach to my son and the other U7 boys in Oceanside Football Club as well as help kindergarten and grade 1 kids learn about Catholicism at Ascension Church in Parksville. I was an avid soccer player and remember my parents helping on the field and wanted to give that same experience to my son. Coaching has given me more opportunity to be active and inspired me to play more. As for my church, the community needed someone who could teach our kids about the very basics of Christianity, kindness, love, charity and taking care of each other and I am all for that.
Why is volunteering important to you?
I have always been someone who likes to contribute to a team and I see our community as just that. I am always happy to help and as a trained teacher I found a way to use my skills and give back.
Which organization are you directing your winning funds to and why?
100 Kids for Change is a youth-run organization for youth ages 18 and under in the Oceanside area, with the purpose of spreading positive change in the community through youth philanthropy. They are supported by the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation and each bring a donation of $10+ to be pooled with the other members’ donations and the members vote on a charity to receive the funds at each of their meetings.
I am impressed by these youth taking initiative to support their community at such a young age. I would like to help them to help more people.
