Emergency Preparedness Fair Strengthens Community Resilience!
In a proactive move to enhance community safety and preparedness, Nak'azdli Whut'en and the District of Fort St. James recently joined hands to host a collaborative Emergency Preparedness Fair on May 7th, 2024. The event, which saw representatives from various emergency services and departments, aimed to educate residents about emergency services, disaster response, and the importance of being prepared for natural disasters such as wildfires and flooding. With the increasing frequency of wildfire emergencies in recent years, the event underscored the need for clear communication and coordinated efforts between communities to ensure everyone's safety during emergencies.The joint effort between Nak'azdli Whut'en and the District of Fort St. James demonstrates a shared commitment to community safety and resilience. Emergencies know no boundaries, and by combining resources and knowledge, the two communities can better prepare for and respond to disasters effectively.
The inspiration behind this event stemmed from the successful collaboration of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) during last year's wildfire evacuations. Building on this experience, the communities committed to proactive measures, including training and community communications.
One key lesson from past emergencies is the importance of keeping communities informed. Events like these showcase the hard work of emergency services and educate residents about the resources available to them.
During the fair, residents had the opportunity to engage with local emergency services and learn more about the services and providers that keep their communities safe. The event also featured a free BBQ which provided attendees with a delicious lunch of Bannock Burgers. The ICUBBQ known as Kwun Cho (Dakelh for “Big Fire”) was on site! Local businesses contributed door prizes, adding to the community spirit of the event.
The Emergency Preparedness Fair, a testament to our community's unity and preparedness, was attended by approximately 150 residents. Their overwhelmingly positive feedback reflects the event's success and fosters a sense of security and support within their community.
Moving forward, Nak'azdli Whut'en and the District of Fort St. James remain committed to enhancing community resilience and ensuring that residents are well-equipped to handle any emergency that may arise.
