Kelowna Pharmacist Provided Critical Care In State Of Emergency
Curtis Fieseler, pharmacy manager at Pharmasave Highway 97/Ellis, found himself among those touched by the Kelowna McDougall Creek wildfire late last summer (August 2023). His actions during this emergency provide a window into his ongoing dedication to his community and the crucial role pharmacists have as health-care professionals.
With an out of control wildfire burning in the area, many Kelowna residents and visitors had to move quickly and evacuate at a moments notice. Understandably, this led to a scramble in the community for essential shelter, food and medication.
Curtis quickly realized some people were being evacuated and displaced late in the evening without their medications for the night, no pharmacies were open overnight in the city and many were unaware pharmacists could do emergency fills. With all this in mind and despite being among the displaced, he contacted Emergency Services and offered 24/7 on-call pharmacy services for those in need.
"As a pharmacist, I felt good that I was able to help the community within our scope of practice. Emergency fills were important, as well as being accessible to the community during a crisis." Fiesler said.
Stepping in to create awareness about emergency pharmacy services and provide access to those in need, Curtis undoubtedly aided several in his community who may have found themselves in a critical situation without it. Curtis' professional approach and dedication to providing vital care no matter the circumstances is a valuable example of the important role community pharmacists can have as part of your health-care team.
