A little lull in the action but we’re back with a few 2022 granting stories before we launch into our newest grant recipient stories next month.
Today, we proudly introduce you to the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, recipient of an $10,000 Island Savings a division of First West Credit Union Community Endowment grant for their Homeless Outreach program last year.
While Indigenous youth are the fastest growing demographic in Canada, the disparity in outcomes is staggering. Despite being only 4% of the population, 60% of Indigenous children live in poverty while 48% are represented in the foster care system and suicide accounts for 38% of all deaths.
The Victoria Native Friendship Centre steps in to help bridge the gap with a fulsome list of programs and services to improve conditions for urban Indigenous peoples. The Centre serves over 17,000 Indigenous people that do not live on reserve. With a committed, compassionate staff, they deliver over 75 programs offering wrap around services with counselling, meal programs, library and language services amoung others.
The Homeless Outreach program served 372 men, women, elders and youth with clothing, beds, sleeping bags, and food.
We applaud the Victoria Native Friendship Centre for the incredible breadth of services and programs offered to Indigenous peoples on South Vancouver Island. Your work is making a difference.
