Community Investment Fund recipient #3
YMCA of Okanagan Association is expanding their playing to learn curriculum to the outdoors of their care centres at Little Scholars (Okanagan College), Young Parents Program (Kelowna Secondary School), Queen’s Park (Penticton) and the new Dilworth Mountain Child Care Centre.
Using the outdoor space as an extension of the classroom, they’ll create safe play areas that incorporate natural and interactive learning elements for children to explore and develop their literacy skills. Learning in the natural environment positively impacts their health and wellness, and gives care providers another avenue to make learning fun. We all know how much more motivating it is when learning is fun.
To assist with this expansion, Interior Savings provided funding in the amount of $20,000 to allow for the purchase of outdoor educational elements and learning materials such as: outdoor art easels, musical instruments, science experiment equipment, mud kitchens, movable construction elements and natural seating. Not only will this investment help children build their literacy skills but also begin to foster an appreciation for the outdoors and its impact on one’s wellbeing. The expansion is expected to launch in the spring of 2021.
