Meet Member Services Advisor Tracy Cairns. Her incredible story of volunteerism starts with a deeply personal connection. Recently, as part of our Lead Well initiative, we recognized Tracy’s tremendous volunteerism with a $500 donation that she bestowed, courtesy of Island Savings, to the Canadian Cancer Society. Hear her story:
“The Canadian Cancer Society is an organization that I hold near and dear to my heart. As a two time cancer survivor, I literally owe my life to them; if it wasn’t for funding they provided, I wouldn’t be where I am today. In 1983, I was diagnosed with a Wilm’s Tumor which is a childhood cancer of the kidney. I was stage four and had my left kidney removed and intensive chemotherapy and radiation. In 2013, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I was thankfully stage one for this cancer but still underwent an intensive surgery called a whipple procedure in which they removed all or parts of five of my organs.
“It’s such a good feeling to know that by volunteering a small amount of your time, you can help so many other people. Find a cause that means something to you. Honestly, everyone has been touched by a cause that can use hard working volunteers. Whether it be heart disease, cancer, dementia, or food security—our own signature cause at Island Savings―there are so many worthy causes and foundations that support them to choose from.” #NationalVolunteerWeek
