Stories of our community involvement
A big shout out to Sandy Harkema! Sandy is being recognized by Island Savings a division of First West Credit Union for her leadership in the community through our employee Lead Well program. To top it off, she is receiving a $500 donation to a charity of her choice! Sandy has chosen to donate to the SaltSpring Therapeutic Riding Association. As the Secretary for the Salt Spring Lion’s Club, Sandy works closely with many groups in the community and helps fundraise for the much needed services they provide. Here’s what Sandy had to say, “This is very exciting news! I feel honoured and excited to be able pass along this good fortune to a very important organization in my community. The Salt Spring Therapeutic Riding Association is my choice to pass on the Lead Well Award to because they provide such a significant service to our community members and they are dependent on donations”. Thanks for your commitment to community, Sandy!

Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Island Savings a division of First West Credit Union would help build a new home for the therapy horses. The Therapeutic Riding program promotes the well-being and education of individuals having physical, intellectual or emotional challenges through the development of equine skills and structured programs with horses. The program also provides opportunities for integration, socialization and development of life-skills through equine activities. Salt Spring Therapeutic Riding Association needs to vacate its current riding facility (pasture, tack room, shelters, riding ring and trails. A new affordable home is needed so this valuable program can continue. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!
