Stories of our community involvement
Thank you! We're blown away by the amazing support our communities provided in the Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union $50,000 SimpleGenerosity community grant program! With an outstanding 4,098 votes placed, it's clear to see that we have some very caring people in our communities. We're so proud to be celebrating Canada150 and the communities and people that make it so great!
We’re delighted to announce Just Breathe as the winner of Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union's $50,000 #SimpleGenerosity community grant! It’s our way of celebrating Canada150 and reinvesting in the heart of Canadian culture—our local communities.
Just Breathe is a fund created by youth actress Kaitlyn Bernard, which supports Camp Goodtimes from the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. & Yukon Division. We’ve been SO inspired by Kaitlyn’s story—a Grade 11 student, she was inspired to create Just Breathe after starting as a child with terminal cancer in the film ‘The Healer’ and donated almost all her earnings from the film to the cause.
The $50,000 will support the expansion of the Youth Council which facilitates positive peer-to-peer connections, enable the Year-Round Family Support Program to organize and fund additional events, and fund additional summer camp spots and travel assistance for kids and families.
Thank you to all the organizations who submitted applications for this community grant, and all our caring community members who voted. Congratulations to Kaitlyn and Just Breathe!
Vote now for Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society by selecting an emoji below! Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union would allow them to continue to provide free transportation for cancer patients across the Lower Mainland. Cancer patients and their families can find it very challenging to obtain rides to attend all of their treatments and public transit can be difficult – especially when patients don’t feel well after treatments. The need for the service continues to grow each month. Already in 2017, volunteer drivers have made 2,024 trips, and donated 5,930 hours driving 125,083 kilometers. Funds are needed to cover the cost of mileage, tolls and parking for the volunteer drivers. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!
Vote now for Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust by selecting an emoji below! Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union will allow them to expand and ensure the sustainability of their annual community outreach event called “Day at the Farm”. The free family event offers a unique opportunity for residents of the Lower Mainland to interact and engage directly with the farms that feed them, as well as gain a better understanding of the importance of local farms for supporting critical wildlife habitat in the Fraser River delta. Activities at the event include farmer-led hay wagon tours, B.C. Dairy milking shows, sheep shearing and rope-making demo, a mini-live auction, wildlife conservation displays, live music and local food. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!

Vote now for Moving forward family services society by selecting an emoji below! Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union will allow Moving Forward Family Services to continue expanding, providing more direct services to children and youth. Counselling, training (play therapy, art therapy), supervision and therapy supplies used in the work with children and youth all contribute to a holistic service. With waitlists for counselling services over one year and sometimes two, Moving Forward Family Services provides free services in just one to two weeks. Moving Forward is seeing about 800 clients per week and receives 20 new referrals and self-referrals per week. About ¼ of their current case load and of the referrals are for children and youth. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!
Vote now for Mission Hospice Society by selecting an emoji below! Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union will help Mission Hospice Society expand its programs to help children understand they are not alone with their loss, and to provide support and care in a non-judgemental environment for them to process their grief. When children suffer a loss, it is normal to feel different and alone; our programming addresses this by bringing children together and building positive and lasting relationships and memories together. As children who are grieving typically fall through the cracks of typical and available programming through school counsellors and local mental health facilities, expanding these programs is paramount to the healthy development of our grieving child and youth population. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!
Vote now for Matthew's House and Communitas Supportive Care Society by selecting an emoji below! Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union will ensure the ongoing well-being of our families and growing community. Matthew’s House has become a vital resource to families in Abbotsford and across the Lower Mainland. For most of the families that use Matthew’s House, the financial cost for an overnight stay is costly and extra money is often tight. Families are able to stay at minimal cost through the generosity of others. Matthew’s House provides quality care for children living with complex care needs, strengthening families by providing an opportunity for rest and rejuvenation. Children with complex care needs require 24/7 specialized support. This need for added care affects families physically, emotionally, mentally and, often financially. Matthew's House provides an answer: it gives parents peace of mind by offering loving, compassionate care for their children in a homey, state-of-the art environment. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!
Vote now for LIFE Recovery Association by selecting an emoji below! Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union would help launch the “Garden Extravaganza Project”, an extreme multi-purpose backyard makeover which includes a new kids’ playground complete with sandbox & rubberized fall protection mats; an Adult Outdoor Fitness Circuit with stations of adult-specific, weather-durable equipment; and a raised garden of planters and window boxes for growing vegetables and flowers. LIFE Recovery, located in Abbotsford is a residential recovery organization for women, offering a continuum of support services for those struggling with addiction. As there are four times fewer services for women struggling with substance abuse than men, we remain committed to helping women recover and re-establish healthy lives mentally, emotionally and physically within the community. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!
Vote now for Langley School District Foundation by selecting an emoji below! Winning the $50,000 SimpleGenerosity grant from Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union would enable the Foundation to expand its Food for Thought program to more schools around the district. The program currently supports Breakfast Clubs in 16 schools, snack programs in 12 schools, backpack programs in 20 schools and lunch programs in two schools. With new innovations such as tower gardens and new learning initiatives such as outdoor classrooms, the Foundation would be able to provide more healthy food, at lower costs to more students. And that's not all! Students would grow their own food within a learning environment that is sustainable and environmentally friendly. The programs, according to teachers, parents and students themselves, have made a huge difference in terms of health, happiness, behaviour and academic success. Thank you for helping us celebrate Canada150 and strengthening our communities with SimpleGenerosity!
