Stories of our community involvement
On behalf of Island Savings I had the pleasure of presenting a special award at the recent AGM for Big Brothers Big Sister Central Vancouver Island for an individual who has made a significant contribution to their In-School mentoring program. Island Savings a division of First West Credit Union has sponsored the program for many years and our staff have been proud supporters and volunteers for countless BBBS fundraisers and initiatives. I was delighted to see a familiar name on the framed certificate I was to present. Our very own Nikki McLellan! Nikki has served as an In-School Mentor since 2012 and has helped to mentor three different elementary school children. During the school year, Nikki has accommodates her work schedule at our busy Woodgrove branch and finds time to meet with her Little one hour each week. When they get together they talk , play board games , have lunch, and play catch. They talk about their visits coming up and she always shows up when she says she is going to. Nikki's Little wishes he could spend more time with her. He says she calms him down and it makes his day go better every time she visits. Nikki shared with me she gets just as much out of their visits. Anytime she is having a bad day she pulls out a special note that her Little wrote for her and all is good again.

Nikki has been a strong ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters as well, volunteering for their Bowl for Kids’ Sake events and many clothing drives. She is always happy to share the positive stories about her experience and encourage others to step up and help reduce the wait list for the many children in our community. Thank you Nikki for your community spirit, leadership and kindness towards making a difference in the lives of our young people. Your efforts are inspiring and definitely helping to make a difference in our island communities.
Island Savings was very proud to accept the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada Community Partnership Award. Representatives from the three BBBS agencies in our trade area recently visited our Administration office to present the honour. The Community Partnership Award is one of three granted annually across Canada to organizations or companies who demonstrate leadership and serve as a community role model, and who contribute by achieving tangible results and improving BBBS’s impact in areas of priority. “Selecting Island Savings for this award was an easy decision,” says Jennifer Kemp, Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sister Central Vancouver Island. “Island Savings chose to embrace giving at every level of their corporation. This partnership demonstrates so beautifully that people and organizations find meaningful and creative ways to help vulnerable children and families. Island Savings and their members have made a positive impact in Vancouver Island Communities and we could not be more pleased or thankful.” In addition to the Central Vancouver Island chapter, Island Savings is proud to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria and Area and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cowichan Valley.
A big thank you to all of our staff who took the opportunity to participate in an hour long CPR and AED device training sessions that was offered this week as part of our month long Make a Difference Days. Hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation the session provided hands on training with a qualified instructor to prepare us for how to make a difference in a situation where it may be critically needed. The session was fast, fun, informative and our instructor made lots of time to answer our many questions. She shared that she herself had become involved as a trainer as a result of a family member having a heart attack and wanting to be more prepared if the situation ever arose again. We were able to welcome five representatives from our community partners at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cowichan Valley and Big Brothers Big Sister Central Vancouver Island to take part in the sessions alongside our team.
A big thank you to all of the Island Savings a division of First West Credit Union staff who took time to go through their drawers and closets to pack up and donate used clothing to Big Brothers Big Sister Central Vancouver Island for their Annual Big Give Clothing Drive. When all was accounted for the Island Savings team donated a total of 92 bags weighing more than 2300 pounds. Big Brothers Big Sisters will sell the clothing as part of their social enterprise business with all proceeds benefiting their valuable community mentoring programs. Thank you to everyone who donated to the Big Give! Don't forget Big Brothers Big Sisters will continue to collect your donations of gently used clothing and accessories year round at their new location at 2030 Northfield Rd, Nanaimo. You can also support them by shopping at the locations new second hand clothing store! It was a very wet, cold Saturday afternoon in Nanaimo but the Island Savings a division of First West Credit Union Community Crew persevered and shared their community spirit and warmth with everyone who dropped by to support Big Brothers Big Sister Central Vancouver Island with their Big Give Clothing Drive. Thank you to Kathy Shaw and Cheryl Curkowskyj who handed out door prize tickets, collected money and helped to serve up coffee and refreshments. Shout out to Big Sister Nikki McLellan who welcomed people dropping off their clothing donations and then helped to rebag items into 10 pound garbage bags. And a mega shout out to Jodi Meldrum who did a little big of everything, helping in all areas of the operation with her great enthusiasm and huge smile! Island Savings support of this event proved to be tremendous. In total our staff brought in 92 bags of clothing of the estimated 154 donated. Wow! So great when you don't let a little rain dampen your community spirit! Thank you to all of the Big Brothers staff, volunteers and community mentors who give back in support of providing friendship and support of our island children.
