The Archway Society for Domestic Peace offers an equine-assisted therapy program for women wanting to address the impacts of trauma. The ‘Healing through Horses’ program has been offered for 10 years through Archway. The core offerings are two eight week trauma recovery groups for women. The groups meet for two hours each week. Part I focuses on reconnecting to the body, learning coping skills, learning how to set energetic boundaries and how to honour emotion. Part II focuses on soothing the nervous system, learning about the four main impacts of trauma, re-writing trauma beliefs, meeting parts of self and understanding the concept of archetypes. Both groups are offered in the Spring and in the Fall. The horses are highly sensitive and pick up people’s feelings. They will often soothe a participant, or demonstrate with their behaviour how to address the situation. Women form meaningful and supportive relationships with the horses. The experiences with the horses offer women a felt sense of safety and assertiveness. Using their imaginations, women can take visual images from the sessions into their everyday lives.
