Type of Work: Helping adults learn reading (from beginning to advanced), writing and/or math skills through one-to-one instruction
Place of Work: PLKS office or public place such as the library
Duties and Responsibilities:
Successfully complete tutor training program/orientation
Tutor adults in reading, writing and/or math skills as identified
Adapt lessons to learner’s personal goals, needs and interests
Confer with PLKS staff about materials and learner progress on a monthly basis
Notify PLKS prior to any necessary absence
Attend appropriate in-service training workshop as announced
Keep records of lesson plans as requested
Time requirements: A 6-month commitment of 1-4 hours per week of tutoring time plus preparation time as needed
Qualifications:
A degree or appropriate professional work related experience
Dependability and promptness
Adaptability to accept and work with people of various racial, social, religious and economic backgrounds
Enthusiasm, patience, flexibility and open-mindedness, and a sense of humour
Willingness to try new and creative ways of teaching
Respect for confidentiality
Membership with Project Literacy
Criminal record check
