What people are saying about us
Mike HertzMedicine Hat Santa Claus Fund

South Country Coop and the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund share a long history of caring for our local community in so many ways. Our Coop has always shown exceptional care for local people and local causes by supporting many organizations and events that really affect the hearts and souls of our residents. Our MHN Santa Claus Fund believes every child deserves to have a Merry Christmas. Our goal is to ensure those less fortunate in our community experience the love and warmth of the holiday season. We provide low-income families with a full Christmas supper and toys for their children at Christmas. Just this past Christmas, because of the many generous donations we received from people and businesses like South Country Coop, we were able to serve 594 families and 1232 children. We are so thankful for all the wonderful assistance we receive from the community. Christmas can be a very difficult and stressful time for many and South Country Coop is always there for us!

Stories of our community involvement
St. John's Presbyterian Church Food Hamper Program

South Country Co-op Limited has been involved with our Food Hamper program since 2014. This program is part of St. John's Outreach ministry with food hampers, consisting of 16 non-perishable items, being distributed to people in our community. The number of recipients coming to the church asking for food has doubled over the last few years.

South Country Co-Op has been donating the bags that are used for hampers. Members of our congregation donate food and/or funds to purchase groceries. We were unable to offer this service for the better part of 2020 because of restrictions due to Covid. Late in October we were able to restart the program so that every Tuesday, from 10:00 - 12:00 noon, anyone can come to the church and receive a food hamper. We have been able to help about 100 individuals/families within the last two months.

The on-going support of South Country Co-Op enables us to provide this service to members of the community who are the most vulnerable and are in need of help. We are most appreciative of their involvement.

Impact Follow-up

Community Need:

Our project has unified our school community as we've worked together to build an educational ag based program to support agriculture and our students as they gain information to direct their future.

Local Co-op Support:

Co-op provided a feed bunk for our steers at no cost. Because of lack of funding, this and many other donations from other companies have allowed us to move forward with the goals and vision we have for helping students become engaged in the agriculture field.

How You Can Help:

Donations and/or donations in kind so we can keep the program running and students engaged. and Volunteers like Mr. Walburger in the above picture who come to share their knowledge in a particular area. We are working towards a barn and a greenhouse in the future.

South Country Co-op helps keep SEASAR in action

Community Need:

SEASAR was established in 1999 and is a non-profit, volunteer-based association devoted to the safety and well-being of the community. Our mission is clear: we respond to the Medicine Hat Police Service, The City of Medicine Hat, Regional RCMP detachments, regional municipalities including Cypress County & Conservation Officers when they require support for searching for lost or missing people, evidence related to investigations, or support related to disaster management.

A good example of the service we provide to the community was visible in this summer as we fully supported the RCMP and Medicine Hat Fire Services in searches for individuals in the South Saskatchewan River, and St. Mary River. Each year, we experience about a dozen active calls, and of course devote many hundreds of hours to training, administration, and fundraising to support operations.

We’re proud to have maintained operational readiness every hour of every day since 1999. Achieving this requires dedicated volunteers, ongoing training, and significant investments in equipment. Our team of approximately 60 volunteers provided over 6,000 hours of service last year alone.

Local Co-op Support:

SEASAR is a 100 percent volunteer organization that receives no operational funding from government. At the same time, we must sustain training and equipment to meet community needs at a moment's notice. Support from community-minded companies and individuals is critical. South County Co-op literally makes it possible to provide operational support to the region.

How You Can Help:

SEASAR welcomes support in many forms. Yes, funding is needed! However, we also need dedicated volunteers to lead and manage the organization, and provide operational support when required. We invite people to visit www.seasar.net to learn more about the organization, our mission, and volunteer opportunities.

Redcliff Library Fundraising Goal almost there!

Community Need:

We offer copy services to our community that are hard to find anywhere else in Redcliff. Our current machine offers copying in colour and black & white, faxes , and scans to email but the machine itself is now almost 12 years old. With new technology since that time, we are raising funds to purchase a new one with WI-FI capabilities. It is our understanding that this is the only public use copier in our town which means it is used quite often every day of the week. Although we charge a nominal fee for services, except scan to email which is free, we keep the prices as low as possible to cover the expenses, and reduce the price if the user supplies their own paper. We also have many service organizations that use the copier as well for their own needs. We pride ourselves on offering our community members the best service possible and look forward to this new piece of modernized equipment to help make all print jobs easier and accessible via WI-FI.

Local Co-op Support:

The generous support we received from South Country CO-OP Ltd. has helped us get closer to our fundraising goal. Their contribution of 25% of the cost for the new copier/fax/scanner is encouraging, as we have now raised almost 50% of our goal. Without their contribution and support of the project we would not be as close as we are to making the purchase.

How You Can Help:

Due to COVID-19, fundraising for these types of projects has been challenging. We still need to raise $2,400.00 and are looking for donations of any amount. The end date for this project is December 2021. If anyone is interested in donating or learning more about this project, please call Tracy @ 403-548-3335 or email tracy@shortgrass.ca. Thank you!

Vauxhall Community Kitchen Renovation on the way!

Community Need:

Our organization has addressed the need to renovated our Vauxhall Community Hall Kitchen with the support of the Co-op. Our Community Hall Kitchen was outfitted in the 1970's and it was in great need of and update, as our Hall is the heart of our community and surrounding area. These renovations will allow our kitchen to be much more energy efficient as well as meeting all current health and safety standards/requirements. Our Community Hall is also our evacuation facility and with these renovations it will be ready and able to be a safe facility to host our members during such an event.

Local Co-op Support:

The support we have received from Co-op is greatly appreciated and has helped the Community of Vauxhall reach the goal to start the renovations of the Community Hall Kitchen. Without this support it would have taken much longer for this project to be able to commence.

How You Can Help:

We are fundraising for the Vauxhall Hall Community Hall Kitchen renovation project and we currently have a 50/50 fundraiser that is taking place until November 30th, 2020. Tickets can be purchased by contacting us by phone or email 403-894-0923 or vauxhallag@gmail.com. The proceeds from this fundraising event will go towards this renovation project and will greatly benefit our entire community. You can also follow the Vauxhall Ag Society on Facebook, for all of our event information.

Fuel Good Day helps feed hungry families

Community Need:

Co-op's support helps us to meet immediate food needs in our community, as well as community connections and learning opportunities that empower those we serve towards their own food security.

Local Co-op Support:

Support from Co-op helps to provide emergency food assistance to nearly 1300 individuals each and every month, half of whom are children. Funding also supports outreach programs, referrals and programming that inspires community members to achieve their own food security through knowledge and skill building, cooking classes and garden programs.

How You Can Help:

Food banks need financial support not only for food purchases, but for operational costs, program supplies, shelving and equipment, transportation, and currently for personal protective equipment and technology upgrades.
