ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT
By Christine McWillis, Community Volunteer
Dedicated Kelowna Volunteers are making a Splash Across the World!

Living Waters Secondary School Project was born from a trip Cathleen Loge took to Tanzania in 2014. After experiencing first-hand the systemic poverty and lack of quality education given to students following elementary school, she knew that there was something she had to do. Upon returning, Cathleen set out to raise enough money to build a secondary school. According to their Volinspire page, “Students at this school will receive an excellent education alongside vocational /entrepreneurship training to equip them in finding or creating jobs for themselves and others. Lack of education is the root of a crippled economy struggling to rise out of poverty and this school will inspire the change that is needed.”

Did you know that only 5% of kids attend any high school in Tanzania? The Living Waters Secondary School project wants to raise this number to 65% in the Mwanza area of Tanzania. To do this, the Kelowna based project aims to raise $350,000 for the construction of a secondary school for 400 students.

They are already making great strides. To date, the group has raised half of its goal, reaching the $175,000 mark through the help of local community members, amazing supportive companies and a dollar for dollar matching grant. The good news is there is still room in the matching grant to double the impact of all new donations!

Today, the organization is looking for help from volunteers willing to use their unique skills to help raise the remaining funds. In particular, if you have skills in event planning and coordination your assistance would be greatly appreciated. The organization has a couple of upcoming events in the new year including a Social Evening in February and a Downtown Scavenger Hunt in March.

If making a difference on a global scale is something that interests you, it is time to get Volinspired!
