Brenda Locke – 2021 Ruby Award Recipient

Each year, Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta chooses a woman in our community to receive our Ruby Award (Women Helping Women). This award honors women of Surrey/Delta who work to improve the lives of women and girls through their professional and/or volunteer work. The Ruby is a deep red gemstone associated with wisdom, importance, vitality, strength, vivacity, power and love: all words embodying the strong and compassionate women who are our award recipients.

Brenda Locke is such a woman. Throughout her professional life, she has served her community in the political arena, both as MLA and her current role as City of Surrey Councillor. During her twenty-five years of experience as an Executive Director, she advanced high-profile issues working with various levels of government, non-profit agencies and the business community.

Brenda is a strong community advocate and uses her voice and her influence to walk her talk. Says Brenda, “I believe when we can, we have a duty and an opportunity to help others. Surrey has so much need, and I have the ability to help where and when I can. I believe it is my walk.” Humbly and quietly, Brenda can be found driving the streets of Surrey handing out coats, food, and basic necessities to those most vulnerable, and has cooked and served many meals at Surrey Urban Mission. She especially is drawn to help the vulnerable at-risk women in our city.

As Brenda proudly serves our community, she sees the need, knows the potential, and responds in kind. “Growth in Surrey has been exponential, leaving too many people behind, feeling marginalized and ignored. I strongly believe that Surrey has the potential to be a model community celebrating diversity and initiative. Surrey is a city full of promise, a city that cares about its residents and embraces quality of life for everyone.”

We are also thrilled to announce that Brenda has become our newest member of SI Surrey/Delta. Her passion and commitment to serve her community makes her a valued member of our team. We welcome Brenda and all she has to offer as we work together to improve the lives the women and girls in our community, and throughout the world
