On Tuesday, July 2, Community Crew team members from Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union Charanjot Sidhu and Kaitlyn Cuerrier helped the Central Okanagan Food Bank begin distribution of more than 6,000 healthy food packs made available to local children in need thanks to Food Banks Canada's After the Bell program.

When schools close their doors, for summer break, school-based breakfast, lunch and after-school program end as well. The After The Bell program aims to fill that gap.

Food Banks Canada, corporate sponsors, and more than 1,000 volunteers packed 100,000 nutritious, child-friendly packs in May. The generous packs include shelf-stable items such as oatmeal, cereal, raisins, and WOW Butter peanut-free spread.

The packs were then sent to food banks across the country, for distribution to school-aged children. Local food banks supplement the packs with fresh fruit, vegetables, and other items thanks to a grant from Food Banks Canada.

“Childhood hunger is real,” says Communications Officer for the Central Okanagan Food Bank, Tamie Williams. “We are very grateful to have these healthy food packs for children who face food insecurity in Kelowna and West Kelowna.”

The distribution of the After the Bell summer food packs continues through the end of August.
