Island Savings staff were happy to give back and help out with many of the duties that went into last night’s Family Dinner at the Saanich Neighbourhood Place. The weekly Wednesday dinner is part of the agency’s food security programming and was a great venue for us to announce an exciting new partnership. Island Savings is very pleased to announce our support of the “Neighbourhood Food Access” program with a grant for $20,000 to support the eight agencies of the Coalition of Neighbourhood Houses who receive and redistribute rescued food from the Victoria Food Rescue Distribution Centre. Goals of the program include: to improve access to nutritious meals and reduce hunger through food programs to clients at the Coalition agencies, and to help address root causes of food insecurity by creating pathways to other supportive programming. Food security continues to be a serious issue in our island communities, with many people going without, and Island Savings is committed to being a community partner helping to move that dial.

In 2016 Island Savings launched our new signature cause – “The Full Cupboard” to raises food, funds and awareness for our island food banks with the goal of no island child going hungry. To date more than $115,000 dollars has been raised, which is incredible, but we know the need continues to rise. This year we explored additional ways that we could address the issues of hunger in our communities and are proud to have been able to work with our friends at The Victoria Foundation to become a co-sponsor of the “Neighbourhood Food Access” program which supports many families and individuals who do not access traditional food banks. As part of our support Island Savings will also be working with the Neighbourhood Houses to deliver some financial workshops and look at opportunities to give back through other ongoing volunteer initiatives.
