Imagine being four years old leaving a playpark unfit for playing because of garbage, tagging behind your mom who says you’re not coming back until “somebody” cleans it up. Then imagine, as mom tucks you in bed, having the brilliance at age four to declare “I’m somebody” and then rounding up friends and neighbours to clean up the park yourself. That somebody is 9 year old Catherine Okalita from Fort Qu’Appelle Saskatchewan who just received an Outstanding Youth Philanthropist award in Regina for national philanthropy Day. She already has her own business and has supported over 20 causes with the proceeds, including making sure every senior in her community receives a Christmas gift. This year alone she has raised over $9,000. Sitting with Catherine is award presenter, Leslie Gosselin, from SaskEnergy. “Would you believe she is so modest her teacher doesn’t even know why she had to miss school today! I told everyone today that we each need to find somebody to help us do something. Just like Catherine!”
