Volunteer Board Director

Give back to your community, end violence against women, and ensure respect and equality in relationships.
Good for people with Special Needs and Diverse Abilities

The Kelowna Women’s Shelter is seeking committed individuals to join our volunteer Board of Directors.
At this time, we are particularly interested in individuals with experience in:
• Communications
• Marketing
• Public Relations
• Fund-raising
• Or Indigenous Relations.
As a non-profit organization, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary in 2020 and embarking on a significant strategic plan including expansion of transitional housing. We support women and their children who’ve experienced intimate partner violence/abuse and serve the area from Lake Country to Peachland. We employ about 28 staff and use the services of over 200 volunteers, to provide emergency and transitional housing, second stage housing, a 24-hour phone line, the PEACE children’s program, the Inside Out Violence Prevention Program for Youth, an Outreach program and a thrift store in order to raise money to support the Shelter’s programs and services.
Our goal is to attract a diverse mix of community and business leaders, men and women, who will help us meet our strategic priorities. We are seeking individuals who have a strong vision of social responsibility consistent with our values and strategic goals. We welcome applications from people who are reflective of the diverse communities we serve in our area.
As a Director you would be expected to:
• Fulfill all governance responsibilities including abiding by the by-laws, code of conduct, conflict of interest and other policies that apply to the Board;
• Prepare for and attend all Board meetings (monthly meetings typically 10 meetings per year, plus committee and other ad hoc meetings);
• Participate in Board committees or project working groups; and
• Represent the Shelter in the broader community.
